Fatty liver means excess fat has accumulated in the liver. When it occurs alongside metabolic risk factors, such as type 2 diabetes or abdominal obesity, and alcohol intake and other causes have been assessed, it may be diagnosed as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). This term has largely replaced NAFLD.
Some people also develop liver inflammation and cell injury, called MASH. Fatty liver often causes no obvious symptoms, so feeling well does not tell you whether further assessment is needed.
An appointment can help if you have:
You can bring existing reports to the first visit; you do not need to arrange a new test package before booking.
The consultation reviews your symptoms, medical history, alcohol intake, medicines and supplements. Your weight, waist size, blood pressure and relevant blood tests are considered together. Further testing depends on the findings; raised liver enzymes can have causes other than fatty liver.
You will have an opportunity to discuss your meals, work schedule, activity and previous attempts to improve your health. The plan can then address the changes you can realistically maintain and the follow-up you need.
Liver scarring is called fibrosis. Where appropriate, a FIB-4 calculation using age, AST, ALT and platelet count helps decide whether further assessment is needed. It is a risk assessment tool, not a diagnosis, and requires age-appropriate interpretation.
A FibroScan or another fibrosis test may be recommended when indicated. FibroScan measures liver stiffness to help assess scarring risk; results must be interpreted alongside your medical history and other tests.
Your plan brings together medical care and practical changes to daily life. The priorities depend on your liver assessment, associated conditions and personal circumstances.
For adults with MASLD and excess weight, sustained loss of at least 5% can reduce liver fat; 7–10% may improve inflammation, and at least 10% may improve fibrosis. These are treatment targets, not guaranteed outcomes. Your target should account for nutritional status and muscle preservation.
Emphasize vegetables, pulses, whole grains and appropriate protein sources, while reducing sugary drinks, highly processed snacks and excess saturated fat. Portions matter.
Your plan might include smaller rice or roti portions, with dal, beans, curd, tofu, eggs or fish according to your preferences and health needs.
Regular exercise can reduce liver fat even without substantial weight loss. A common goal is at least 150 minutes of moderate activity weekly, with resistance exercise included when suitable. Your starting level should reflect your fitness, symptoms and medical conditions.
Diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure and weight-related treatment may need attention alongside liver care. Medicines are selected after assessment. Suspected advanced disease or uncertainty about the diagnosis warrants specialist evaluation.
Follow-up provides an opportunity to review progress, discuss difficulties, adjust the plan and decide when tests should be repeated. An improved SGPT result alone does not establish that liver scarring has resolved.
Alcohol can add to liver injury. Avoiding it is advisable, and complete abstinence is particularly important with advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis. Unverified liver detox products and supplements are not substitutes for treatment.
Bring what you already have. Additional investigations will be advised when clinically necessary.

It warrants assessment. Ultrasound grades describe the appearance of fat, not the stage of liver scarring. Your risk needs to be assessed alongside your medical history and appropriate tests.
Yes. Normal SGPT/ALT and SGOT/AST do not exclude fatty liver or significant fibrosis. Liver enzymes should not be the only basis for deciding whether further assessment is needed.
Yes. Fatty liver also occurs in lean adults. Assessment still includes metabolic health, possible alternative causes and scarring risk. Weight and nutrition goals need individualization rather than automatically following an obesity treatment plan.
No. The decision depends on your risk assessment and previous results. People with uncertain or higher-risk findings may need elastography or another test. Discuss the need and arrangements during your consultation.
Liver fat can decrease substantially with appropriate treatment. The extent of recovery depends on disease stage and sustained management; advanced scarring requires specialist care. No fixed recovery time or permanent cure can be promised.
Online consultation is available for suitable report reviews and follow-ups. An in-person examination or further testing may be advised. See the online consultation page for details.
Yes. Walk-in patients are welcome, and patients with scheduled appointments receive preference. Booking ahead helps you plan your visit.
Vomiting blood, black tarry stools or new confusion need emergency assessment. New jaundice or increasing abdominal swelling requires prompt medical attention. Do not wait for a routine fatty liver appointment.
